WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The Kim Sparling New Vision Advocate of the year award is presented annually to a person who has a developmental disability who demonstrates hard work and dedication in advocating improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through: 

  • Promoting equality of people with .developmental disabilities within their community.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Actively participating on committees and promotes the goals of inclusion and citizenship.
  • Teaching others about the abilities and strengths of people with developmental disabilities
  • Speaking up publicly or helping others to speak up.

AWARD PRESENTATION
The winner will be announced at the 2017 Speaking Out 10 year anniversary conference and will receive a plaque and $500 to put towards their personal dream as outlined in the award nomination form. This will be presented by Ron and Gwen Sparling at the conference.

Celebrating 10 years of networking, learning and self- advocacy

The Speaking Out 2017 10 year anniversary conference is being held at the beautiful Unifor (CAW) Family Education Centre October 13 -15, 2017 in Port Elgin, Ontario.

Conference welcome and check-in starts Friday, October 13; Supper for full conference participants is at 6pm. Evening dance in Nick’s lounge from 8-11pm.
Conference sessions will start Saturday morning.
Conference fees apply to all conference participants who are not presenting.
Each Presenter will receive a separate registration form at the time of presentation confirmation.

Payment of Conference Fees
Payment is to be made by cheque. Cheques should be made out to “Speaking Out”. Registration will be confirmed once payment is received. Payment is due with registration. Send payment to: Speaking Out, c/o New Vision Advocates, 190 Adelaide Street South, London, ON   N5Z 3L1.

“LOOKING BACK AND MOVING FORWARD” ~ A 10 Year Anniversary 

 Port Elgin, Ontario

The Speaking Out 2017 conference committee is accepting presentation proposals from self-advocates, organizations and people working with and for people who have intellectual disabilities. 

The conference is hosted by self-advocates and will highlight direct involvement from self-advocates and address issues related to self-advocacy. 

Workshop proposals will be accepted until June 16, 2017.

 In responding to feedback from previous conferences, we are looking for presentations that use a variety of approaches such as: music, slide presentations, small group discussions, videos, participatory exercises etc…

This year’s conference will focus on “Looking Back and Moving Forward” – Celebrating 10 Years.

Ideas for topics include, but are not limited to:


  • Technology – what new aps are out there?
  • It’s time for college – how to get started
  • Employment experiences
  • What’s new in the government?
  • Hot topics such as, ODSP, Basic Income pilot project
  • Equal Rights/ Responsibilities and how to exercise our rights
  • Developing Leadership skills
  • Public Speaking, Self-Esteem and Confidence Building
  • Getting your message out – how to better advocate in the community
  • Networking – Getting yourself out there
  • Sexuality, Healthy relationships and Marriage
  • Managing finances
  • Anti-Bullying
  • The Arts – successes in film, dance and other media


We favour highly interactive workshops that involve the attendees in active learning and feature self advocates, as presenters.

Off Highway #21, just south of Port Elgin, Ontario turn west towards the lake on CAW Road #25 (there is a set of traffic lights at this intersection). Continue on CAW Road #25, down a hill, toward the lake. At the bottom of the hill turn right on Shipley Avenue. The first right on Shipley Avenue is the main entrance to the Centre.
